Welcome Blueberry Month in the USA!  August is blueberry month in Canada.  This is the peak of the blueberry season in the USA and growers are busy bringing in a new crop.  Blueberry lovers everywhere are visiting u-pick farms, attending blueberry festivals and having a great time.  Check out the fresh produce section of your local store and find some of the best values of the year on fresh blueberries. 

 

Blueberries are small wonders…sweet, juicy, colorful and altogether inviting. With just 80 delicious calories per cup and virtually no fat, blueberries make a healthy, delicious snack, especially for those watching their weight, and offer us many important nutrition and health benefits.

Blueberries are an excellent source of vitamin C.
In fact, a serving contains about 14 mg or almost 25% of daily requirement for Vitamin C. Vitamin C is needed for the formation of collagen and to maintain healthy gums and capillaries. It also aids in the absorption of iron and promotes a healthy immune system.

Blueberries are a good source of dietary fiber.
Government surveys tell us that there is not enough fiber in our diet. A diet high in fiber contributes to heart health, helping to keep cholesterol in check. Fiber also aids in digestions and helps maintain regularity.

Blueberries are an excellent source of manganese.
Manganese plays an important role in the development of bones and in the metabolism of protein, carbohydrate and fat.

Blueberries contain substances that have antioxidant properties.Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals which are unstable molecules linked to the development of a number of diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease and other age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s. According to the USDA database of the antioxidant activity of selected foods (ORAC values), blueberries rank among the highest on a per serving basis. The antioxidant capacity of blueberries is 6,552 micromoles TE/100g. Substances in blueberries called polyphenols, specifically anthocyanins that give blueberries their blue hue, are the major contributors to the antioxidant activity of blueberries.

Blueberry smoothieBlueberry Smoothie Recipe

2 cups fresh, canned or slightly thawed frozen blueberries

1 cup (8-ounce container) lowfat vanilla or other

flavored yogurt

1 cup fruit juice, such as orange, pineapple or apple

1 tablespoon honey or sugar, more or less to taste

In the container of an electric blender, place blueberries, yogurt, juice, and honey; whirl until smooth. Serve immediately.

YIELD: 2 or 3 portions (about 3 cups)

We made some smoothies earlier today, including strawberry-banana, and you know, the girls had to have the pink ones! They were a big hit, and the pitcher was gone in a matter of minutes!
